I’m going to try something new tonight and recap my weekend for all of you. I don’t think I’ve ever just sat at my laptop and chatted about what I’ve been up to before, and it honestly feels like I’m about to have a very long, one-sided conversation, but lets do it, I guess (I sound very confident in my recapping abilities, don’t I?).
Thursday night, Madi (if you’re reading this and don’t know me well, Madi is one of my number one gal pals, who I bonded with over our similar taste in music and bands) and I left Fayetteville and headed to Kansas City for a concert featuring Swim Deep, Wolf Alice, BORNS and The 1975, that was the next day.
The first thing I’d like to say, is that I would highly recommend not driving to KC in the dark, because there are actually no streetlights on any of the highways/interstates, which made seeing pretty hard. As you may know, seeing is fairly important while driving.
Regardless, we arrived in KC around 10:30 PM, parked near the venue, bundled up, grabbed our blankets and headed to the side walk, where we would sit, with a few other dedicated fans, for the next 20 hours, waiting for the doors to the venue to open.
To both of our mothers, if you’re reading this, we’re both very sorry we didn’t tell you we were going to camp out at the venue, because we didn’t want you to worry, but everything turned out okay and we survived (pls don’t be mad, we’re young and sometimes we have to throw caution to the wind and live a little!).
A few hours later a homeless man sat near us and we chatted for a while, but after a bit he started seeming slightly off (my first clue should’ve been when he reached forward and held my foot for an extremely awkward second, before I pulled my legs to my chest thinking, “da heck?”). Eventually he started inching closer and closer to Madi until he was shoved up against her. Then eventually the man rested his head on Madi and she hopped up, leaving me there like “help?????”
Little did I know, she was actually going to get the bouncer from a bar down the street to help us get rid of him. In the time Madi was gone, the homeless man had scootched over to me and rested his head on my shoulder several times, ignoring my requests for space, and finally put his hand on my thigh before I yelled for him to not touch me, at which time I drew the attention of construction workers from down the street and woke up some of the sleeping fans, right as the bouncer was running up.
Unfortunately, the bouncer and construction workers couldn’t get the man to leave, and after several minutes of yelling he called local security, which threatened to have him arrested, at which point the man finally left.
Creepy crisis averted, right?! Hah, you thought. Yuh boy was back less than 10 minutes later just standing by us, just creepily looking down at us. Seconds later the bouncer and security were back, some more yelling occurred, and then the homeless man sprinted away. Security watched the street the rest of the night, but this girl didn’t get a wink of sleep after that incident.
Pausing the story again, because I’m just picturing my mom reading this right now, and I’m not sure if you’re disappointed, upset, or just rolling your eyes at my stupidity, but I just want to let you know, I love you!!!
So continuing with the story, Madi and I laid there until 6 am when the Starbucks on the next block opened and we went over for some coffee. I’m not kidding you when I say we were literally waiting for it to be 6 am just so we had something to do with ourselves. It was long night.
Fast forward, through a long day of doing a lot of nothing and getting an extremely sore tailbone, we had the girls ahead of us in the line save our spot so we could put our stuff in my car and get ready for da show (sitting on something other than a cement sidewalk corner was a very nice treat!! Never been more thankful for the seats in my car).
The show opened with Swim Deep an indie pop group from the UK. They were followed by Wolf Alice, a Grammy-nominated, alternative rock group, also from the UK. I’ll confess, I’d never really listened to Wolf Alice prior to the show, but now I’m absolutely hooked on their sound; 10/10 would recommend. Seriously, I’ve had them on repeat ever since (also their drummer is cute, so). Wolf Alice was followed by BORNS, most known for the current hit, Electric Love. The final act, group was The 1975, a rock group from the UK.
If you know Madi or me, you probably know, we like The 1975 a decent amount (so by decent, I mean a lot). Something else that is important to note, is that Madi and I really like to dance like maniacs and don’t really think about who’s watching. And apparently being in the front of an audience and dancing like a fool will get you noticed.
Let me explain. Madi and I were just doing our thing, flailing around, when The 1975 started playing Girls (one of the most popular tracks on their debut album, and also one of my favorites) and we started going ham (well I guess as “ham” as one can go when there’s a mob pressing up against you), when the lead singer, Matty, looks at us, smirks, puts his hand up to his face like a phone and mouthed “call me” to us.
If I had to write a sentence to describe how both of us felt in this moment, it would probably go as follows:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So there we were, Matty Healy having just told us to call him, girls around us asking if we just saw him and if we knew him, and all I could think was, “What do I do with this information? How do I call you? Are you kidding me? What do I do with this?”, followed by more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and some ?????!!!!????!!!????????!?!?!?!!!????????????!!!???
It should also be noted that Madi was full on weeping by this point.
Eventually, the concert ended (as concerts do), and we decided to head to the back of the venue in the hopes of snapping a quick photo with The 1975 as the left. Also, I think both of us were low-key hoping Matty would remember us and give us those digits. But were we so lucky? No :). The 1975 sped to their car and apologized saying they had a flight to catch, leaving Madi, me and the other fans heartbroken (but probably mostly us, because he had told us to call him after all).
As you can imagine, Madi and me were in a very “ugh” mood, when we passed a hotel, glanced inside, and saw BORNS standing in the lobby. We decided to go in to see if we could snap a photo, but as our evening was going, they got on the elevator before we could make it up to them. So we sat on a couch in the lobby, in a double “ugh” mood.
Not even a minute later, a British voice says, “Do you ladies want to grab something to drink?” I looked up and the drummer from Wolf Alice was standing in front of us, asking us if we wanted anything to drink.
Yes, this is the drummer that I previously mentioned was cute.
Yes, this is the drummer whose band is nominated for a flipping GRAMMY.
Obviously, we said “sure” so as to sound chill and not too eager. Because no big deal right? Just a Grammy nominated rockstar, concerned about our thirst. Have I mentioned he’s nominated for a Grammy? Like he’s good at what he does.
I guess now’s a good time to mention his name is Joel, so I can stop typing “the drummer from Wolf Alice” every time I mention him.
Moving on, Joel got us something to drink and we chatted for about a while. We discussed everything from Donald Trump (and what a freaking idiot he is) to college (or “Uni” as he called it) life. If you happen to be reading this and you’re a huge Wolf Alice fan, you’ll be happy to know Joel was a genuinely nice guy and was so humble when his Grammy nomination was brought up. He even asked if we wanted to go to Taco Bell and pulled out about 15 Taco Bell giftcards.
At one point he asked if we had somewhere to stay, because he said he didn’t like the thought of girls being alone on the street at nights *swoon*, which we did, but this led to a perfect segue for me to tell him about the creepy man from the night before.
Eventually we realized it had gotten late and we should head out, so we said our goodbyes, snapped a quick photo and decided on a whim, to drive the airport to see if The 1975 had left. Approximately 30 minutes into the drive to the Kansas City airport, we realized that our idea was pretty stupid, as the band was probably already in their terminal and neither of us were about to fork out enough money for a plane ticket, just to get into a terminal for a photo.
So we headed back to the other side of Kansas City to where we were staying, passed out immediately upon arrival (keep in mind we had been awake for the past 50 hours or so), slept until about 2 in the afternoon the next day, headed back to Arkansas and have been living with post concert depression, struggling though finals ever since.
